EPAA Newsletter - December 2023

EPs at The Pro Football Hall of Fame

Thirty-seven EP Alumni, EP Actives, and guests visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH on Sunday, December 3rd. Recent grad and EPAA board member Kyle Heim organized a great trip with a pizza lunch and discounted tickets.

Thank you to the several EP Alumni who helped the EPAA provide a bus from campus, plus pizzas and brownies for the Actives and EP recruits.

At the very crowded pizza shop another patron in a wheelchair asked an EPAA board member about the large group of the young men who were in the small dining area and he then said, "they certainly are gentlemen".

Featured Alumni: Jim "Barney" Poole

Jim “Barney” Poole is one of the really good people we come across in our lifetimes. As an athlete, Jim was a great, selfless teammate and always did what was best for the team. Beyond his achievements on the wrestling mat and football field, he is a wonderful, caring human being, according to fellow EP Jeff Lane (1972).

Jim served as President of Epsilon Pi in 1971 and Jim was recently inducted into the Grove City College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Jim was a two-sport standout, who helped Grove City wrestling and football reach historic heights during his distinguished career (1966-1970). Poole compiled a 33-11 record as a wrestler and his 33 career wins ranked second in program history upon graduation.Jim was a member of Grove City’s undefeated 1966 football team and spent three seasons as a stalwart on a Wolverine defense that limited opponents to 2.9 yards per carry while forcing 61 interceptions. Grove City’s 21 wins from 1966 to 1968 tied the record for most victories in a three-year span and the Wolverines went 24-9-2 during Poole’s career. After graduation, Poole taught science and gifted education in the Grove City Area School District while serving as a football and wrestling coach. He also served as a scholastic wrestling official for 25 years and earned the opportunity to officiate the PIAA Championships on three occasions.
