Featured Alumni: Chris Smith (1972)

A GCC alum who worked with my Dad at Republic Steel in Canton, OH made us aware of what GCC had to offer and it was an easy and logical choice considering the solid reputation, right major, and great price. GCC had better qualities than anywhere else and playing football at GCC was an option.

I knew absolutely no one on campus when I enrolled. As I got to know more people through sports, dormitories, and classes, the EPs were a group of upperclassmen that I really respected. The members of my class that I could see myself associating with were also attracted to the EPs. Little did I realize how many of those would be close friends for life. BROTHERS!

There are too many lasting memories to list, including friendships that started as teammates, that went on to be brothers. Shared lives, weddings, children, vacations, professions, celebrations, and even ends of lives. High school recruits, that ended up players and then also friends for life.

What have I done since Graduation:

-Two years in the Army after - having been drafted.

-Three years back at my HS alma mater, Massillon Perry coaching football, basketball, and baseball.

-Two years at Western Kentucky University as a graduate assistant football coach and earning my Masters.

I was contacted then by R. Jack Behringer with a job offer to come back to GCC and I spent five years as an assistant football coach under Joe Kopsinky and assistant track coach under Jim Longnecker. I was promoted to head football coach, a position I stayed in for 32 years. I also served as AD from 1996-2002 and retired as an Associate Professor.

During those 37 years I also spent time coaching men and women's golf, filled in on occasion as baseball coach, softball coach, women's basketball coach and tennis coach. I also team taught a history course Sport in American History with Dr. Barbara Aiken and Dr. Gary Smith.
